Planning a Family Vacation

Summary: You can become overwhelmed by all of the choices you have to make when planning a family vacation. Or, you can involve your entire family and allow them to help make the choices as well. The most important thing to remember in planning a family vacation is to make allowances and preparations to meet everyone's diverse interests and needs.

Family vacations can be a good time to make memories, form better relationships, and make your family bond stronger. You can take the stress out of planning your family vacation by making sure that you family agrees on the destination, activities, and accommodations. Follow these guidelines to plan your next family vacation:

  • At least two months before vacation time, gather your family and discuss possible destinations for your vacation. Take all suggestions and discuss each one to ensure that everyone feels that their suggestion has been heard.
  • Once you decide on a destination, plan how you will arrive at your destination, what you will do when you get there, how long you will stay, and when you will leave to come home.
  • Find all of the information you can about your destination online, from libraries, and from speaking with travel agents.
  • Make sure that there are activities to keep everyone happy. Everyone has different needs and different interests. Make sure that each family member has something to do while on the vacation so that they will have a good time and not sulk about being bored.
  • Some destination vacation packages offer activities geared towards younger children, as well as teenagers. Discuss with a travel agent such packages if you think that your children's interests will conflict during vacation.
  • Perhaps you chosen a vacation in a different country. Don't forget to arrange for passports, exchange of currency, translation dictionaries, and perhaps a trusted tour guide.
  • If you are working with a travel agent, make sure that you ask about promotional packages, deals, and family group discounts. Perhaps you'll get a larger discount if two families vacation together, such as your family and your brother's family.
  • Remember that you can get greater travel discounts with airlines if you plan ahead and book early, being flexible about when you travel.

Most people miss out on the fun of actually planning the family vacation because they don't take the time to talk with the family, find the best deals, and allow the family to have their own input. The most important thing to remember when planning a family vacation is to allow your family to be a part of the entire process, from deciding where to go, to making travel arrangements, to choosing the hotel. Everyone has their own expectations and you'll be better prepared to meet those expectations if you allow them to be part of the planning.
