High School Graduation Party Themes

Summary: Instead of becoming overwhelmed when planning a high school graduation party, choose one theme to simply the process. Once you've chosen a theme, make sure that you choose games, activities, food, and music to reflect the theme. If it's not a surprise party, you might consider checking with the graduate to determine her likes and dislikes when choosing a theme.

Your child has worked towards his high school graduation for many years, so it is appropriate to acknowledge the achievement by hosting a party for him. First, you need to decide whether you will have a small gathering of family and friends, or host a large open house. Depending upon your budget and time investment, you'll need to decide upon food, drink, music, and entertainment. An easier way to decide those things is to plan your party around a theme. Some fun themes to consider for a high school graduation party are:

  • This is Your Life. One of the first reality broadcast shows, This is Your Life originally aired as a radio show, and then crossed over onto TV. A host surprised the guest by relating his biography, and then brought family members and old friends on the show to reunite with the guest. You could theme your graduation party around this notion by hanging posters of the graduate with pictures as a baby, toddler, child, and teenager. Family members could recite anecdotes or amusing stories about the graduate. Have a game and ask players to name the graduates favorite food, TV shows, music, et cetera. Cetner the entire party around the life of the graduate.
  • School Spirit. Your graduate may be college bound and might love her choice of school. The theme for her graduation party could be school spirit, where you incorporate memories of high school with college pride. Hang high school banners and colors, and show the colors of the college she's chosen. Hand decorations relating to both her high school and college, and find appropriate accessories at a college bookstore or online. Make sure that the cake reflects the school colors, as well.
  • Sports. If your daughter or son was an athlete in high school, and loves sports, plan the graduation party with a sports theme. Display pictures of him playing football, or photos of her running track. You could host an outdoor party and play tag football, dodge ball, volleyball, or some other favorite outdoor game. Hand out small trophies to the winners of games, and make sure that the cake has a sports theme, as well.
  • Carnival. Set up several stations around the party venue with varied games and activities. This type of party theme will keep even the most finicky party attendee from being bored. Each station should have a different game to play, activity to perform, or food to try. You could even set up a theater room where movies can be run on a DVD player, and you can supply popcorn.
