Planning a Family Party

Summary: Parties are fun, family parties are even more fun but what usually isn't fun is planning that family party. Here is how you can quickly and easily plan a fantastic family gathering.

Whether you are talking about throwing a fantastic New Years' celebration, a wonderful children's birthday party, or even an outstanding anniversary party for your parents, everyone loves a good party. In fact, the cry can be heard year 'round across the country: "Party! Party! Party!" Parties, after all, are one of the best ways for family and friends to spend time together, build relationships, and create memories.

Chances are good that there is only one time that a person might not be excited about an approaching party. Even though fun times might be awaiting you, it can be just a little overwhelming when you are responsible for planning a family party. If you are responsible for planning your next family party, then never fear. There are just a few simple things you are going to need to do in order to make your next family party one to remember.

  • Purpose. The purpose of the party is going to help determine such little items as who, when, where and what. So, prior to any other consideration, decide on the purpose of your party. For example, is the party going to be a New Years' celebration only attended by the adults in your family, or is it going to a more family friendly affair?
  • Guests. You need to decide on who you should invite to your family party. While it is often fun to have all your family at any given party, there are going to be times when you may not want a particular family member at your party or you think that the party would only be appropriate for people above a certain age. Whatever your criteria, you should write down a list of everyone that you plan on attending so that you can be sure that you did not forget anyone that absolutely needs to be there.
  • Date. Many events that you may be interested in celebrating are going to be somewhat time sensitive. So, unless you are simply wanting to throw a party just to throw a party you are going to want to begin your planning a few weeks or a month or two in advance. By beginning your planning as far in advance as you can, you will have enough time to be able to have a truly fantastic party.
  • Location. Just like when you have your party, where you have your party is going to be important. If you are looking to have an intimate family gathering then often your home or a restaurant will be the perfect location. However, if you are looking for something that is more unique then try other locales—just use a little imagination.
