Themed Parties for Grown Ups

Summary: Themes can add excitement to an ordinary get together. You can build your theme through costumes, food and decorations.

When I was growing up, New Year's Eve was celebrated by hosting a themed costume party. It was great fun and everyone looked forward to the event all year long. At the conclusion of each year's party, the following year's theme was revealed to give our guests plenty of time to plan their costume for next year. Friends and family were competitive and secretive about their costumes; they all tried to out do their costume from the year before. Part of the fun was the "WOW" effect as they entered the party. Prizes were awarded for the "best," "most creative" and "most elaborate" costumes.

Themes can be built around costumes, food, decor and entertainment. When party planning consider the following:

  • Budget: How much can be spent per person on food, decor, entertainment and facility fees? Determining a budget will help narrow down a theme.
  • Location: Space is always a consideration. How elaborate will decor and entertainment be? Will additional space be required for seating or will it be a flow event? Does the theme require a dance floor? How many guests will be attending?
  • Food and Beverage: Who will provide food and beverage for the event? To keep costs down considering making the event a "pot luck." This works well for more casual themes like a "Country Ho Down" or 'Beach Party". For a more upscale theme like a "Roaring 20's Speak Easy" catered food may be a better alternative.
  • Decor: If the budget allows for decorations to support the theme, inexpensive decorations can be obtained from party stores or on-line sources. Larger decor props can be rented from a party rental company.
  • Entertainment: Does the theme require live entertainment? Some themes are dependent upon entertainment to make the theme recognizable. A "Casino" theme, for example, would require tables and dealers. Can music be piped in or is a DJ or band required to support the theme?
  • Theme: Ideas for themes can be based upon common interests of the group like dancing, sports, holidays or movies. Costumes can be added for additional interactive fun. For instance if the theme was "Batman Movies" guests could come dressed as their favorite Batman character.

As you can see there are many details to consider when planning a themed event, but they are well worth the time and energy to plan. Start with a checklist and a timeline and work backwards. Several items like space, catering and entertainment need to be contracted well in advance. Be creative and have fun!
