Gift Ideas for People Who Have Everything

Summary: Gift giving is an art. For some it comes naturally, for others it can be a real chore, especially if the recipient is an avid shopper and already has everything.

My oldest son loves to shop. He is always acquiring new treasures. He buys things for himself that I never even knew existed. For instance a few years ago, he purchased a remote ignition for his truck. At first, I wondered, why would anyone want one of those? Then winter came and he was able to start his vehicle without leaving the comfort of the indoors. We were at the mall in the middle of a blizzard, and he was able to warm up the truck before we scurried out with our packages.

Shopping for him can be a real challenge because if he sees something he wants, he buys it right away. Over the years as his interests have expanded, I have learned to listen and find gifts that are more service oriented than possession oriented, here are some of the ideas I've come up with:

  • Gourmet cooking classes. Most major cities have companies that facilitate small groups to rent a gourmet kitchen and chef for the evening. The group is split into teams; each team is responsible for one course of the meal. Wine and appetizers are enjoyed while the preparation is going on. The evening finale is a four or five course gourmet meal.
  • Wine of the Month Club. This service delivers a selected wine monthly. For someone that isn't a wine connoisseur, this can offer a nice sampling of a wide variety of wine. Most clubs offer a nice selection of reds and whites as well as international and domestic.
  • Private lessons. Special instruction that support a hobby can be unique and personal. Photography classes for a budding photographer. Dance lessons for an aspiring dancer. Foreign languages classes or art classes for someone culturally minded.
  • Extreme Sport Event. Participation in an unusual sporting event and creat a memory that will last a lifetime. Hot air balloon rides can be scenic and relaxing. Cowboy round up or cattle drive can be challenging and entertaining. Rock climbing can offer exhilaration and excitement.
  • Spa services. Most people don't take the time to indulge in luxurious activities. Offer a weekend at the spa or monthly spa treatments for a year. Many day spas offer package deals that can be mixed and matched to customize the perfect gift.

As with any gift, it is the thought that counts. Pay attention to hobbies, interests and habits of the gift recipient. Make a mental note of comments or activities he has been engaged in. Comments like, "I've always wanted..." can be a clue for potential gift giving ideas. Research expendable or non-tangible ideas to find a unique gift for the person in your life that has everything.
