Planning an Affordable Super Sweet Sixteen Birthday Party

When I was a young girl I could hardly wait to turn sixteen. In my mind it was going to be this fabulous turning point from being a little girl to being an adult. A sweet sixteen party signifies the right of passage from childhood to adulthood. This is a day to be celebrated and remembered. My mother and I had a mother/daughter themed party where we planned make overs and pedicures at home. I invited all of my best friends and their Moms. The afternoon was spent by trying new hair styles; make up colors and polishing our nails. It was inexpensive but the memories made were priceless.

This party should reflect her personality. Incorporate her favorite colors, textures and smells. Themes can also add flair to the gathering. Below are some tips to aid in the planning:

• The guest list should include all of the important people in her life. Ask for her to assist you with compiling the list so no one is left out. Space may be a consideration so be prepared to negotiate the attendees.
• Find a venue that is suitable to her style and party theme. Options may include a roller skating rink, bowling alley or hotel ballroom.
• Be creative with the decorations. This party should be all about her personality. Inexpensive decor items can be purchased on-line or through a local party supply store.
• Party favors should compliment the decor. Girls love personalized items like boxes of chocolate or lip gloss.
• Have her assist with music. Offer to assist her with burning all of her favorite songs on a CD to play at the party.
• Finger foods are usually your best bet for a gathering of young people. Veggie and fruit trays with dip, crackers with cheese and hot wings are always a hit with teens. If it is warm, a simple BBQ with hamburgers and hotdog would also go over well.
• The focal point of the event will be her cake. Have the cake made in her favorite flavor and frosted in her favorite color.
• Possible themes for a sweet sixteen could include: 50's sock hop, beach party, 70's disco or luau. All of these options require minimal preparation and provide plenty of interaction.

It is important as parents hosting this event to treat the attendees as grown ups and not children. Do not plan for childish games; rather offer activities that will provide opportunities for interaction.
