Dealing With a Chronically Ill Child

Summary: As a parent or a child custodian, there is no greater suffering than recognizing your child is chronically ill. Emotionally, mentally, and physically dealing with a child suffering from chronic illness takes a different set of skills and mind set for a parent(s) or provider.

No one can fully prepare you for the roller coaster ride you will take as you watch your child suffer an illness you cannot fix. As parents, we want to take away our child's hurts and make it better. Unfortunately, we are not always able to put a dressing to our child's wounds and give them a loving push to encourage him or her to do something that will most likely entail another bicycle fall or sports injury. There are tips on how to deal with life's unexpected challenges especially as they deal with your family treasures—your children.

  • Be prepared for the truth. Life can be unmerciful. Yet recognizing your child has an illness and is dependent on you as his or her parent to get him or her through this health issue is crucial. Realizing life is not fair can be dealt with later on your time with a supportive spouse, partner, family member, or friend. The most important concern now is to love your child through the illness.
  • Understand your child's illness. Research, read, research, and read again all you can regarding your child's health situation. Understanding the illness your child is suffering will empower you to make the wisest choices regarding your child's health as those situations pop up. Discuss options with your child's doctor(s). Do not be bashful. Doctors want to offer solutions to ailing patients. A collaborative effort on the part of a medical expert and the person who knows the patient best, you the parent or child custodian, will enable the best health selections available for your child's condition.
  • Most importantly, stay positive. Although your heart may be breaking into a million pieces, your child does not have to see your suffering. You can lean on your spouse or partner, family and friends for your own support. Consult a professional therapist, psychologist, or psychiatrist to help you handle your life living with a chronically ill child. It will be money well spent.
  • Treat yourself to time out for yourself to help you rejuvenate long hours and sleepless nights while you are helping your child. There is no need to feel guilty. It is best to ensure you entrust your child's care with a responsible person who will know how to quickly contact you in the event of an emergency. Stay close to your home area in the event you need to dash home quickly due to a medical emergency but take time for yourself.

Appreciate life and take loads of photos. Life is a journey with new chapters to be written at every road's bend. Be grateful for the moments, love, and time you have with your chronically ill child. Your child will be happy you are there for him or her as you deal with life's' unexpected challenging journeys together.
