Childproofing Your Own Home

Summary: Parents go to great extents to ensure the safety of their children. Numerous accidents occur in the child's own home due to childproofing oversights that could have avoided the mishaps.

A child's home should be his or her safety net. The responsibility of childproofing the youngster's home is that of the parent or child provider. Here are some tips that can make childcare safer, less stressful, and more enjoyable.

  • Start your own home childproofing efforts early. So many trips and events will keep you occupied at a very quick tempo once you learn of your new bundle of joy's arrival. Taking an inventory of your home and the childproofing projects that must take place prior to your child's arrival will prove valuable.
  • Children are curious beings. A bright color or the intrigue to find out what is inside a cabinet or closet can send your child running towards a very dangerous situation. Keeping latches adhered to kitchen and bathroom cabinets can help avoid a child opening cleaning supply bottles or jars that can detrimental to your child's life.
  • Walk into each area of your home and squat or lay down to see what your child may be able to see at a lower level. Putting yourself at your child's level may help you find areas that you did not realize may be dangerous to a young child.
  • Many toys and baby products have taken into account the many dangers of a child's safety. Do not take chances. When you or someone purchases a present, toy, clothing, or books for your child, check the buttons, protrusions that may be on the baby's product to ensure your child cannot choke or hurt him or herself with the new item. Think like a child and do not be timid in pulling on your child's new toys. You may discover something has come loose from your child's newest and favorite present.
  • As parents, there is a good chance you will not be able to be present 100% of the time around your children. Reduce the risk of cuts and major bruises by turning furniture with sharp edges or padding those objects down. As children learn to walk or run in the home, accidents can be reduced by taking preventive measures.
  • Keep chairs pushed inward towards the table. Children love to climb. A chair that is tightly secured toward the table will provide more struggle on your child's part to pry it apart. The struggle with the chair may alert you that your child may be trying to climb onto furniture.
  • If you enjoy having your child watch you while you cook, place the infant carrier, child seat, or chair facing you. Clear the area around your child so he or she cannot reach towards an item(s) that may be harmful to him or her.

Many unnecessary visits to the hospital emergency rooms can be avoided with some preventive home childproofing medicine. Why take a chance with your loved ones' life? Take a moment and start childproofing your home sooner rather than later.
