Surviving a Day at the Amusement Park

Summary: Amusement parks with the whole family can either be a really great experience, or a really miserable one. Follow these tips to maximize your time and money.

Some of my favorite family memories are from days spent at amusement parks. The great thing about amusement parks is that there is usually something for everyone, whether it be exciting roller coasters or getting autographs of dressed-up characters. If you're going to spend the money and effort to go to an amusement park, you want to make sure that it's worth it.

  • Pick the park wisely: There are many different amusement parks scattered all over the country, with different themes, different rides, and different age-targets. Some amusement parks are full of rides and roller coasters that young children might find too scary (or might not even be tall enough to get on in the first place), while other theme parks are geared toward younger ages and might bore teenagers. Make sure you know what you're getting into before you pay for the tickets. Look online for reviews of the amusement park, and find out what kinds of activities and rides are available. (You might even end up finding some coupons online as well!)
  • Hate lines? If you can, try to go to amusement parks on days that aren't as popular. You won't have to wait in line as long on a Wednesday in February as you will on a Saturday during summer vacation. Many theme parks have passes that get you on to rides or in shows faster. Check with the specific theme park you are going to and find out if any are available and how they work.
  • Dress for success: Check the weather forecast before you go. Most of your time is going to be spent outside, walking around or waiting in lines. If it's going to be cold, bring jackets. If it's going to be warm, wear lighter clothing and wear sunscreen. Wear comfortable shoes with support that won't give blisters (and bring some band-aids just in case you get blisters anyway). Remember that some rides at amusement parks will get you wet, so don't wear clothes that will ruin with water. If it's going to be rainy, bring umbrellas, and consider even bringing disposable ponchos. If you wait until you're inside the theme park and you decide you want to buy one, they are significantly more expensive.

Take a little time and effort while planning your trip to the amusement park, and you are guaranteed to not have as much of a headache once you are there. Most importantly, remember to relax and have fun!
